The trip to Hebron and Herodion
Today's archeological excursion took the Salesian Study Centre to Hebron and Herodion. Hebron is the ancient city where the Patriachs and Matriarchs are buried. It is the location of Mamre, where Abraham was vistied by the three mysterious men who told of his and Sarah's future child. After visiting these sites the community broke up for a while so that each person could explore the city as he pleased. It is located about 30km south of Jerusalem.
The next stop on the journy was to Herodion. Herodion is a volcano-like hill with a truncated cone located 12 kilometres south of Jerusalem near the city of Bethlehem. Herod the Great built a fortress and palace on the top of Herodium, and was buried there. His tomb was discovered in 2007 by Ehud Netzer (1934-2010). Herodium is 758 meters above sea level.
